Siyabonga Ngezana, the 28-year-old South African centre-back who has been a mainstay of the FCSB defence, has undergone surgery on his meniscus, the Romanian champions confirmed. The operation marks the end of a difficult season for the former Kaizer Chiefs man, who has been battling knee problems that hampered his performances in the closing stages of the campaign.
Delayed Surgery Raises Questions
According to FCSB official Mihai Stoica, Ngezana had been managing the knee issue for some time. The defender chose to delay surgery in order to continue playing during the crucial phase of the season, a decision that drew criticism from some quarters. ‘He should have gone under the knife earlier,’ Stoica was quoted as saying. ‘The problem affected his mobility and his confidence in duels.’
Ngezana played his last match on 18 May, a 2-0 defeat to Hermannstadt in which he looked visibly hampered. He was an unused substitute for the subsequent play-off matches, with FCSB managing his workload carefully as the club pushed for silverware.
A Promising Move to Europe
Ngezana joined FCSB from Kaizer Chiefs in the summer of 2023, making the leap from South African football to the Romanian Superliga. His physical style and aerial dominance made him an immediate fan favourite in Bucharest, and he played a key role in FCSB’s title-winning campaigns. The defender’s performances attracted interest from several European clubs, though the knee injury may now put any potential transfer on hold.
The timing of the surgery is far from ideal. With the new season approaching and FCSB preparing for European competition qualification, losing their first-choice centre-back for a significant period represents a major blow to the club’s planning.
Recovery Timeline and Impact
Meniscus surgery typically requires a recovery period of four to six weeks, though the exact timeline depends on the extent of the damage and the type of procedure performed. If the recovery goes according to plan, Ngezana could be back in training by mid-to-late July, potentially in time for the start of the new Superliga season. However, he would miss the early stages of FCSB’s pre-season programme and any early European qualifying rounds.
FCSB will now have to explore the market for defensive reinforcements, or rely on their backup options to cover Ngezana’s absence. The club’s recruitment department has been alerted to the need, though finding a centre-back of Ngezana’s quality on short notice is never straightforward.
Ngezana’s Legacy at FCSB
Since arriving in Bucharest, Ngezana has made over 80 appearances for the club, establishing himself as one of the most reliable defenders in the Romanian top flight. His journey from the PSL to European football has served as an inspiration for young South African players considering a move abroad. A full recovery will be essential for him to continue that trajectory.
