Dinamo Bucharest have suffered a double setback in the summer transfer window, with club president Andrei Nicolescu confirming that two priority targets have slipped through their fingers. The Romanian Superliga side had identified a French midfielder and an unnamed second player as key reinforcements for the upcoming season, but both deals collapsed due to timing and financial constraints.
The Ducrocq Deal That Wasn’t
The first target was Tom Ducrocq, the 26-year-old central midfielder currently plying his trade with SC Bastia in Ligue 2. Dinamo submitted a formal offer for the Frenchman but found themselves caught in a waiting game. Bastia failed to respond within the deadline set by the Romanian club, and with time running out, Dinamo were forced to withdraw their interest. ‘We gave them a timeline, and they did not respect it,’ Nicolescu explained. ‘We cannot wait indefinitely when we have other targets to pursue before pre-season begins.’
Ducrocq, who has made over 100 appearances for Bastia since joining the Corsican club, would have brought Ligue 2 experience and midfield steel to the Dinamo engine room. His ability to play both as a defensive midfielder and a box-to-box runner made him an attractive option for coach Nuno Campos, who is looking to reshape the squad ahead of his first full season in charge.
A Second Missed Opportunity
The second target remains unnamed, but Nicolescu revealed that Dinamo had been tracking the player for an extended period and had held direct discussions with him. Despite the player’s apparent willingness to join, the club could not agree on financial terms. ‘We monitored him for a long time, we talked directly with him, but we could not offer him the project he was looking for,’ Nicolescu admitted.
The president’s comments suggest that Dinamo are operating within a constrained budget, unable to compete with wealthier Romanian clubs or foreign suitors for the most sought-after talents. The failed pursuit highlights the gap between ambition and resources that many Superliga clubs face when trying to build competitive squads.
A New Era Under Nuno Campos
The transfer disappointments come at a pivotal moment for Dinamo. Portuguese coach Nuno Campos is set to be officially presented on Thursday, marking the beginning of a new era for the club. Campos inherits a squad that finished mid-table last season and will need reinforcements to push for European qualification.
Nicolescu struck a pragmatic tone despite the setbacks. ‘We have other targets. The window is still open, and we are working every day to strengthen the squad for Nuno Campos. These things happen in football. You win some, you lose some.’
Looking Ahead
With pre-season approaching rapidly, Dinamo’s recruitment team will need to move quickly to identify alternative targets. The club has already launched its season ticket campaign, with prices starting at 300 lei for renewal at the Peluza Catalin Hildan, signalling optimism about the season ahead. Whether they can translate that optimism into successful transfer business remains to be seen, but for now, two targets have been crossed off the list.
