Brazilian Official to Take Charge of the Azteca Showpiece
FIFA has confirmed that Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio will officiate the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when Mexico face South Africa at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Thursday evening. The announcement came as part of FIFAs broader referee appointments for a tournament that will feature an expanded 48-team format across three host nations: the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Sampaio, 44, brings considerable experience to the occasion. He will be assisted on the touchlines by fellow Brazilians Bruno Pires and Bruno Boschilia. The Brazilian trio has been entrusted with handling the high-profile curtain-raiser, which carries enormous cultural and sporting significance as Mexico becomes the first nation to host the World Cup for the third time, having previously staged the tournament in 1970 and 1986.
A Seasoned Official on the Global Stage
Sampaio is no stranger to the pressure of major tournaments. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he took charge of four matches, earning praise for his composed decision-making and man-management. His experience at the highest level of the game, including regular fixtures in the Copa Libertadores and Brazilian Serie A, made him a natural candidate for the high-visibility assignment of opening the worlds largest sporting event.
FIFA has appointed a record number of officials for the 2026 tournament. With 48 teams competing across 16 venues in three countries, the governing body has selected 52 referees and 88 assistant referees to cover the expanded schedule. This represents the largest officiating contingent in World Cup history, reflecting the logistical complexity of a tournament spread across an entire continent.
Group A: The Opening Night Narrative
The match between Mexico and South Africa kicks off Group A, which also includes South Korea and the Czech Republic. For Mexico, playing on home soil at the iconic Azteca Stadium represents an opportunity to replicate the magic of 1970 and 1986, when they reached the quarter-finals on both occasions as hosts. The towering venue, which has witnessed two World Cup finals and Diego Maradona Hand of God goal, will be packed to its 87,000 capacity for the opening ceremony and match.
South Africa, meanwhile, returns to the World Cup stage for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010. Bafana Bafana have undergone significant development under their current technical staff and will look to harness the underdog spirit that carried them past some formidable opponents during qualifying. A strong performance against the hosts in the opening match would send a statement to the rest of the group.
The Refereeing Framework for a Three-Nation World Cup
This World Cup presents unique challenges for match officials. Matches will be played across different time zones, climates, and altitudes, from the sea-level venues in Canada to the high-altitude stadiums in Mexico City and Guadalajara. FIFAs officiating department has prepared the referee cohort with specialized fitness and acclimatization programs to ensure consistency across all 104 matches of the tournament.
Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs is also among the selected officials for 2026, having served as a fourth official in Qatar 2022 without taking the whistle for a match. The expanded tournament provides more opportunities for referees from across FIFAs confederations to gain World Cup experience, a development welcomed by the international refereeing community.
As the countdown to kick-off reaches its final hours, all eyes will be on Wilton Sampaio and his team as they lead the players onto the Azteca pitch for the moment that officially begins the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
