Hermannstadt Part Ways with Goalkeeper David Lazar After Relegation

Hermannstadt and David Lazar Part Ways

Romanian Liga 2 side Hermannstadt have announced the departure of goalkeeper David Lazar after the mutual termination of his contract. The 33-year-old shot-stopper requested the release, paving the way for what is expected to be a return to the Romanian SuperLiga.

A Brief Stint in Sibiu

Lazar arrived at Hermannstadt in February 2026 in a surprise swap deal with FC Arges. The Sibiu club sent goalkeeper Catalin Cabuz to Arges in exchange for the experienced Lazar, who was seen as a crucial addition for the clubs battle against relegation.

Despite the high hopes, Lazar was unable to prevent Hermannstadt from dropping into Liga 2. In 17 official appearances across approximately four months, the goalkeeper conceded 21 goals and was between the posts for both legs of the relegation playoff against FC Voluntari.

The Decisive Playoff

Hermannstadt won the first leg at home 3-2, giving fans hope of survival. However, the return fixture in Ilfov proved disastrous, with the team losing 0-3 in emphatic fashion. The result condemned Hermannstadt to relegation and prompted a period of significant squad restructuring.

A Career of Experience

David Lazar is no stranger to Romanian football. Throughout his career, he has represented Vointa Sibiu, Pandurii Targu Jiu, FC Botosani, Danish side Vejle, Astra Giurgiu, Universitatea Craiova, Gloria Buzau, and FC Arges. His wealth of experience at both domestic and international club levels made him an attractive option for Hermannstadt in their hour of need.

What Comes Next

With his contract now terminated at his own request, Lazar is expected to find a new club quickly. Reports suggest a SuperLiga side is interested in securing his services, and the experienced goalkeeper is likely to be an asset for any team looking for reliable cover or competition for the starting spot.

For Hermannstadt, the departure is part of a broader squad overhaul following relegation, as the club looks to build a team capable of mounting an immediate promotion challenge in Liga 2.
