From Columbus to the Global Stage
Steven Moreira, the Columbus Crew defender and reigning MLS Defender of the Year, is preparing for the most significant chapter of his professional career. When Cape Verde takes the pitch at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer, Moreira will be at the heart of a historic moment for the tiny island nation off the west coast of Africa.
With a population of roughly 491,000, Cape Verde becomes the second-smallest nation ever to qualify for football greatest tournament. The Blue Sharks punched their ticket in dramatic fashion on October 13, 2025, defeating Eswatini 3-0 to secure a place in the World Cup for the first time in the nation history.
A Journey Rooted in Family Sacrifice
Moreira path to representing Cape Verde is as distinctive as the nation qualification story. Born and raised in France to Cape Verdean parents, the 31-year-old defender played for French youth national teams up to the Under-21 level. But despite growing up far from the archipelago, Cape Verdean culture was ever-present in his household.
At my house, all the culture was about Cape Verde, Moreira told MLSsoccer.com. The music, the vibes in my house. I did not grow up there, but the way my parents raised me was more about Cape Verde than France.
His parents left Cape Verde as young adults, arriving in France with little more than determination. They worked tirelessly to provide for Steven and his brother, instilling a work ethic that would later define his professional career. Moreira made the formal switch to represent Cape Verde in 2023, a decision he wishes he had made sooner.
A Trophy-Laden Career
Since joining Columbus in 2021 from Ligue 1 side Toulouse, Moreira has established himself as one of MLS premier defenders. His trophy cabinet already includes an MLS Cup, a Leagues Cup title, and a Campeones Cup winners medal. The 2024 MLS Defender of the Year award cemented his status among the league elite.
His partnership with CJ Dos Santos, the San Diego FC goalkeeper also selected for Cape Verde World Cup squad, gives the Blue Sharks a strong MLS spine. The duo represent the growing influence of Major League Soccer on the international stage, particularly for nations outside the traditional European powerhouses.
What Cape Verde Brings to the World Cup
As the second-smallest nation in World Cup history, Cape Verde enters the tournament with nothing to lose and everything to gain. The Blue Sharks squad blends experience from European leagues with emerging talent from across the diaspora. Moreira composure and leadership will be vital as the team navigates a group stage that will test their defensive organization against more fancied opponents.
You think about everything, Moreira reflected on the qualification achievement. You think about your family, your background. When you grow up, that the dream to play in a World Cup. You watch as a kid. So you think about everything.
For Cape Verdean communities around the world, this summer represents more than just football. It is a celebration of national identity, of a people who have maintained their cultural pride across continents and generations. And Steven Moreira, the boy who grew up listening to Cape Verdean music in a French home, will be leading the charge.
