Christian Eriksen ‘Doing Well at Home’ After Second On-Field Collapse: Danish Midfielder Speaks Out

A Harrowing Deja Vu in Odense

The football world held its breath once again on Sunday as Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine in Odense. The 34-year-old midfielder, who suffered a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020, fell to the ground in the 65th minute clutching his chest, prompting an immediate suspension of play.

Medical staff rushed onto the pitch as Denmark and Ukraine players formed a protective ring around the former Manchester United playmaker. The match was subsequently abandoned as Eriksen was stretchered to a waiting ambulance and transported to a local hospital.

A Different Incident, But No Less Terrifying

In a statement released via Instagram, Eriksen confirmed he had been fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) after his 2021 cardiac arrest, and that device performed exactly as designed. “As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021,” he wrote.

Eriksen emphasised that his recovery had already begun and that he was grateful for the swift response of the medical team. “Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.”

A Remarkable Journey Since 2021

Eriksen’s collapse at Euro 2020 was a defining moment in modern football — a stark reminder of the fragility of life even for elite athletes. He was given life-saving CPR on the pitch in Copenhagen and later fitted with an ICD. Due to Italian regulations preventing players with ICDs from competing in Serie A, his contract with Inter Milan was terminated.

What followed was nothing short of remarkable: a return to English football with Brentford in January 2022, followed by a successful spell at Manchester United where he made 107 appearances, scored eight goals, and won both the Carabao Cup (2023) and FA Cup (2024). He left Old Trafford at the end of his contract in 2025 and now plays for German side Wolfsburg.

Football Community Rallies

Tributes and messages of support poured in from across the football world. Denmark teammate Rasmus Hojlund was visibly distraught on the pitch alongside goalkeeper Mads Hermansen and Joakim Maehle. Ukraine’s players also showed profound solidarity, walking alongside Eriksen’s stretcher as he was taken for treatment.

UEFA issued a statement confirming the match had been abandoned and expressing full support for Eriksen and his family. The Danish Football Union has since confirmed that the midfielder is at home and recovering well. “For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children,” Eriksen added.
