Manchester City Faces Mass Exodus: Nine Players Could Leave in Post-Guardiola Shake-Up

Manchester City Braces for Post-Guardiola Overhaul: Up to Nine Players Could Leave

A new era is dawning at the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola departure after a decade, the most successful stretch in Manchester City history, marks the end of something once unimaginable and now nearly impossible to replicate. But Guardiola is not the only one heading for the exit door, and the scale of the turnover could be seismic.

According to The Athletic, up to nine first-team players could leave City this summer, with the club facing a massive rebuild under new sporting director Hugo Viana and a yet-to-be-confirmed managerial appointment.

Bernardo Silva and John Stones: Two Pillars Departing

City have already confirmed that Bernardo Silva and John Stones will leave when their contracts expire on June 30. Two icons. Two players who won everything in sky blue. After nine and ten years respectively, their cycles are complete, and it is now on Viana to find replacements.

Silva was the player Guardiola used more than any other across his entire coaching career. His departure leaves a creative void in midfield that will be exceptionally difficult to fill. Stones, meanwhile, redefined what a modern centre-back looks like, blending defensive solidity with ball-playing ability that few defenders in the world can match.

Seven More on the Departure Lounge

The Athletic reports that seven additional players could leave City this summer: Nico Gonzalez, Rico Lewis, Tijjani Reijnders, Omar Marmoush, Mateo Kovacic, James Trafford, and Nathan Ake. Each case carries its own logic.

Kovacic and Ake are veterans with only one year left on their deals, natural cycle endings for players in their thirties. But the cases of Nico Gonzalez, Marmoush, and Reijnders are more striking. City spent a combined 187 million euros (approximately $200 million) on the trio less than two years ago. Nico and Marmoush are under contract until 2029, Reijnders until 2030. Their potential exits would represent a significant admission that the post-Guardiola transition requires drastic measures.

Academy Products in Limbo

The same scrutiny applies to academy graduates Rico Lewis and James Trafford. Trafford, who represented England at this summer World Cup, failed to secure the number one spot. City bought him back last year for more than 30 million euros, but the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma pushed him into a backup role. Still, he contributed to City FA Cup and Carabao Cup triumphs when called upon.

Dias and Gvardiol: Not for Sale, But Not Guaranteed to Stay

Perhaps most concerning for City fans is the situation surrounding Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol. Both are considered among the best defenders in world football, and neither is actively for sale. However, both are reportedly considering their options.

Gvardiol in particular is said to be mulling a new contract offer from City while also weighing interest from major European rivals. His potential departure would be the biggest statement yet about the scale of the shift underway at the Etihad.

A New Era Beckons

The scale of this rebuild would be unprecedented even for a club of City resources. Replacing Guardiola is challenge enough. Replacing the spine of the squad simultaneously could define the next five years of the club history. Enzo Maresca is the frontrunner to take over, and he would inherit a squad that looks very different from the one Guardiola leaves behind.
