Marseille Face Real Threat of Europa League Exclusion Over Financial Breaches

Financial Storm Brewing at the Velodrome

Olympique de Marseille face a pivotal hearing before UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body this Tuesday, with sources at the club not ruling out the possibility of exclusion from next season’s Europa League. The French giants are appearing before European football’s financial watchdog after accumulating approximately 157 million euros in net losses over the past three financial years.

The situation marks a dramatic escalation of a problem that first surfaced in 2022, when Marseille was fined 2 million euros and placed under a settlement agreement requiring them to progressively reduce their deficit toward the UEFA-mandated threshold of 60 million euros over three years.

A Worsening Picture

While clubs like PSG, Lyon, and Monaco are also appearing before the CFCB this week, their cases are expected to result in minor sanctions at most. Marseille, however, appears in a far more precarious position. From a loss of 12.7 million euros in 2022-23, the club’s deficit ballooned to 105 million euros by the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

The French club may attempt to argue mitigating circumstances, including the severe crisis in domestic television rights that has impacted all Ligue 1 clubs. However, UEFA may view the worsening trend as evidence that Marseille has not taken adequate steps to comply with its settlement obligations.

Range of Potential Sanctions

The settlement agreement signed in 2022 spells out the consequences clearly: “If the club does not fulfill the main objective of the settlement agreement, it is in violation. The First Chamber of the CFCB can then apply one of the following measures, depending on the severity of the violation: a fine, a limitation on the number of players for the 2026-2027 season, a ban on registering new players, or exclusion from the next competition.”

An exclusion from the Europa League would be a devastating blow, both financially and competitively, for a club that has fought hard to return to European competition. The coming days will be decisive for Marseille’s immediate future.
