PAOK Push for Giannoulis Return
PAOK Thessaloniki have stepped up their efforts to bring Dimitris Giannoulis back to the club, presenting an official offer of three million euros plus one million in bonuses to Bundesliga side FC Augsburg. The 30-year-old left-back has emerged as a priority target for the Dikefalos as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Super League season.
According to sources close to the negotiations, PAOK have intensified their pursuit in recent days, with club officials working tirelessly to bridge the gap between their valuation and Augsburg expectations. Giannoulis, who previously played for PAOK between 2021 and 2023, has maintained strong ties with the club and its fanbase.
A Familiar Face
Giannoulis knows the club well. The left-back made 67 appearances for PAOK across all competitions during his first spell, contributing five assists and establishing himself as one of the most consistent full-backs in Greek football. His departure to Norwich City in 2023 was a significant loss, but his subsequent move to Augsburg in the Bundesliga has not quite yielded the regular game time he had hoped for.
The prospect of returning to a club where he was loved and where he thrived is clearly appealing. PAOK manager Razvan Lucescu is understood to have personally phoned Giannoulis to discuss the move, emphasizing the role he envisions for the left-back in his tactical setup.
Financial Details
PAOK offer of 3 million euros guaranteed, with an additional 1 million in performance-related bonuses, reflects the club determination to secure the signing. Augsburg, who paid approximately 2.5 million euros for Giannoulis, are reportedly open to negotiations but are holding out for a slightly higher guaranteed fee.
The Greek international current contract with Augsburg runs until 2027, meaning PAOK must negotiate a transfer fee rather than pursue a free transfer. However, with Giannoulis not being a regular starter in the Bundesliga, the German club may be willing to do business at the right price.
What This Means for PAOK
Securing Giannoulis would be a significant statement of intent from PAOK. The club are aiming to challenge for the Super League title and make an impact in European competition. Adding a player of Giannoulis experience and quality at left-back would provide both defensive solidity and attacking width from the flanks, a key component of Lucescu tactical approach.
With pre-season preparations on the horizon, PAOK will be hoping to finalize the deal swiftly to ensure their new signing is integrated in time for the start of the campaign. The next few days could prove decisive in determining whether Giannoulis makes an emotional return to the Toumba Stadium.
