A Major Blow for the Rapids
Colorado Rapids and United States goalkeeper Zack Steffen has undergone successful shoulder surgery, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The 31-year-old shot-stopper is now facing an extended period on the sidelines, with a return expected in late fall at the earliest.
The injury is a significant setback for both club and player. Steffen has been a cornerstone of the Rapids since joining from Manchester City in 2024, making 78 appearances across all competitions for the Colorado club. His experience and shot-stopping ability have been central to the team’s defensive organisation, and his absence will leave a considerable void between the posts.
A Storied Career
Steffen’s career has taken him from the United States to the top of English football and back again. He began his professional journey with the Columbus Crew, where he established himself as one of MLS’s brightest goalkeeping talents between 2017 and 2019, recording 25 clean sheets in 84 appearances. Those performances earned him a move to Manchester City, where he served as the club’s number two across multiple trophy-winning campaigns.
On the international stage, Steffen earned 30 caps for the United States, making his senior debut in 2018. He kept 14 clean sheets during his national team career, representing his country at the highest level. While his most recent international involvement has been limited, his experience within the USMNT setup remains valuable.
Who Steps Up?
With Steffen sidelined until late autumn, Colorado must turn to their backup options. The most likely candidate to assume the starting role is Nico Hansen, the reserve goalkeeper who has made sporadic appearances for the first team. The club may also look to homegrown US youth international Adam Beaudry as an alternative, giving the young prospect an opportunity to gain valuable first-team experience.
The timing of the injury is particularly challenging. At the FIFA World Cup break, the Rapids sit 11th in the Western Conference table, four points outside the playoff positions with a record of five wins, nine losses, and one draw from 15 matches. Losing your first-choice goalkeeper during a critical period of squad evaluation and preparation threatens to disrupt the momentum the club had been seeking to build.
Road to Recovery
Shoulder surgery for a goalkeeper is a particularly delicate procedure, given the demands placed on the joint in the position. The rehabilitation process will require patience and careful management. Steffen’s experience with overcoming physical challenges throughout his career will serve him well during the recovery period.
The Rapids will need to assess whether the current squad has sufficient depth to cope without their number one, or whether the transfer market offers solutions. With the World Cup break providing a natural pause in the MLS schedule, the club has time to evaluate their options before the season resumes. The hope will be that Steffen returns to full fitness without complications and can resume his place in goal when the push for the playoffs intensifies in the final months of the campaign.
