DC United Lock Up Homegrown Talent Jackson Hopkins with Contract Extension Through 2029

Academy Product Commits Long-Term Future

D.C. United have secured the future of one of their most promising homegrown talents, signing midfielder Jackson Hopkins to a contract extension that runs through June 2029. The 21-year-old US youth international will now occupy a U22 Initiative roster slot, reflecting the club high expectations for his development.

Rising Through the Ranks

Hopkins joined the Black-and-Red first team in April 2022 and has steadily grown into a reliable contributor. Across five seasons, he has tallied six goals and two assists in 88 appearances, showcasing the versatility and work rate that have made him a fan favorite at Audi Field.

His journey through the D.C. United Academy is a testament to the club commitment to developing local talent. We are thrilled to reach an agreement with Jackson on a new deal, said Dr. Erkut Sogut, managing director of soccer operations. He has worked tirelessly to improve himself, and we are excited for what is ahead for him in a D.C. United jersey.

Sogut emphasized the broader significance of the extension, adding: This is another testament to the D.C. United Academy and the great history it has in developing talent in the DMV.

International Pedigree

Hopkins has represented the United States at multiple youth levels, from U-20 to U-23, demonstrating the national team program confidence in his abilities. His continued development in MLS will be crucial as he aims to break into the senior USMNT setup in the coming years.

The U22 Initiative slot designation is particularly noteworthy. Under MLS roster rules, U22 Initiative players receive reduced budget charges, allowing the club to invest more resources elsewhere while retaining young talent. This move signals that D.C. United views Hopkins as a cornerstone piece for their long-term project.

Building Through the Academy

D.C. United have historically been one of MLS leaders in homegrown player development, producing talents like Bill Hamid, Andy Najar, and more recently Kevin Paredes. Hopkins extension continues that tradition and reinforces the club commitment to identifying and nurturing local talent.

The DMV region has become a hotbed for soccer talent in the United States, and D.C. United academy has positioned itself as the premier destination for young players in the area. By locking up Hopkins on a long-term deal, the club ensures continuity and sends a message to other academy prospects that there is a clear pathway to the first team.

For Hopkins, the new contract represents both validation of his hard work and a challenge to continue improving. Now occupying a U22 Initiative slot, the expectations will be higher, but the 21-year-old has shown throughout his young career that he thrives under pressure.
