Defensive Reinforcement
LAFC have added experienced defensive depth ahead of the MLS Secondary Transfer Window, acquiring Ukrainian international Yevhen Cheberko from the Columbus Crew in exchange for a 2026 international roster slot. The 28-year-old center-back will officially join the Black and Gold when the window opens on July 13.
Proven MLS Pedigree
Cheberko brings a wealth of MLS experience to Los Angeles, having contributed one goal and one assist in 94 appearances across all competitions for Columbus since arriving in 2023 from NK Osijek in the Croatian First Division. He was an integral part of the Crew success, helping the club win the 2023 MLS Cup and the 2024 Leagues Cup titles.
Yevhen is a proven MLS defender with the versatility, technical quality and experience to strengthen our back line, said LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington. He has competed at a high level throughout his career and understands what it takes to win.
International Experience
Beyond his club credentials, Cheberko has earned two caps for the Ukrainian national team since making his debut in 2020. His international experience adds another dimension to an LAFC squad that already features several players with national team commitments, including stars headed to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Thorrington expressed excitement about integrating the defender into the squad: We are excited to welcome Yevhen to LAFC and believe he will be an important contributor as we continue competing for trophies on multiple fronts this season.
A Title-Winning Addition
The acquisition of Cheberko is a statement of intent from LAFC, who have been one of MLS most ambitious clubs since entering the league in 2018. With two MLS Cup appearances in the last three seasons and a 2022 championship to their name, the club is clearly positioning itself for another deep postseason run.
Cheberko versatility is a significant asset. Comfortable in both a back four and a back three, he provides tactical flexibility for LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo. His experience in high-pressure playoff matches with Columbus will be invaluable as LAFC navigate a crowded schedule that includes MLS regular season, Concacaf Champions Cup commitments, and potential Leagues Cup fixtures.
The move also addresses a key need for LAFC. While the club has been strong offensively, defensive consistency has been a concern at times this season. Cheberko arrival should shore up the back line and provide a steadier platform for the team attacking talents.
