The Rise, the Setback, and the Road Back
Three years ago, Jamal Musiala was the brightest young star in European football. Germany’s No. 10, the Bayern Munich academy product seemed destined for the very top of the game. His dribbling, his close control, his ability to glide past defenders with an almost balletic grace had drawn comparisons with the game’s greats. Then came the injury that changed everything.
In 2025, Musiala suffered a serious injury that sidelined him for months. For a player whose game is built on explosive movement and quick changes of direction, the road back was never going to be straightforward. The silence during his rehabilitation was telling. The football world, always quick to move on to the next sensation, largely forgot about the young German magician.
The Long Road to Recovery
In an extensive interview with L’Equipe, Musiala opened up about the mental and physical challenges of his recovery. It has been a test of patience,
he said. When you are used to playing every week, to feeling the ball at your feet in front of 75,000 people, the isolation of rehabilitation is difficult to describe.
The Germany international spent countless hours in the gym, in the pool, and working with sports psychologists to rebuild not just his body but his confidence. You question everything,
he admitted. Your body, your ability, whether you will ever be the same player again.
A Changed Player, A Changed Perspective
Now approaching full fitness again, Musiala returns to a Bayern Munich side that has evolved in his absence. The attacking midfield role he once owned has new occupants, and the tactical landscape at the Allianz Arena has shifted. But those who have watched him train in recent weeks report a player who has not lost his spark.
The joy I felt dribbling as a kid is still there,
Musiala explained. If anything, the time away has reminded me why I fell in love with this game in the first place. Sometimes you need to lose something to understand how much it means to you.
Looking Ahead to the World Cup
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Germany will be hoping that Musiala can rediscover his best form in time. Julian Nagelsmann’s squad is rich in attacking talent, but none of them possess quite the same ability to unlock a defense in tight spaces as the 23-year-old.
Musiala is cautious about setting expectations too high. I know people expect me to be the player I was before the injury immediately, but that is not realistic,
he said. It will take time, but my patience is not unlimited. I want to play, I want to create, I want to make a difference.
For German football fans, the prospect of a fully fit Musiala pulling the strings in the final third is an enticing one. His unique blend of technical ability and game intelligence is a rare commodity. If he can recapture even 80 percent of his pre-injury form, Germany’s World Cup campaign would receive a significant boost.
