Mason Greenwood Closing In on Roma Move as Champions League Football Beckons

Greenwood Attracted by Roma’s Champions League Return

Mason Greenwood appears set to trade the south of France for the Italian capital, with Roma emerging as the frontrunner for the 24-year-old’s signature. After a sensational season at Marseille — where he scored 26 goals and provided 11 assists in 45 appearances — the former Manchester United prodigy is ready for his next challenge.

The deciding factor appears to be Roma’s qualification for next season’s Champions League. For the first time since the 2018-19 campaign, the Giallorossi will feature among Europe’s elite after finishing on the Serie A podium, while Marseille can only offer Europa League football. That discrepancy looms large in Greenwood’s thinking.

Lucrative Terms on the Table

Sources in Italy indicate that Roma, under the guidance of Gian Piero Gasperini, are prepared to make Greenwood the centerpiece of their attacking rebuild. The proposed contract would reportedly exceed 4 million euros net per season, with bonuses and incremental increases over the duration of the deal. Fenerbahce have also registered interest, but Roma’s Champions League status gives them a decisive edge.

Negotiations between the player’s representatives and the Rome-based club have reportedly advanced rapidly. Greenwood himself is said to be determined to make the move to Serie A, seeing it as the ideal platform to continue his development after re-establishing himself at the highest level in Marseille.

Complex Deal Structure

The path to completion is not entirely straightforward. Marseille will not part with their most bankable asset cheaply, and the club’s financial situation adds complexity. The French side must also distribute 40 percent of any transfer fee to Manchester United, a clause negotiated when Greenwood joined Marseille in July 2024. Roma are expected to test the waters with an opening offer in the region of 40 million euros.
