From Vegas Beginnings to Bay Area Breakout
Preston Judd journey from a youth player in Las Vegas to the leading scorer for Bruce Arena San Jose Earthquakes reads like a Hollywood script. The striker with nine league goals and two assists in the 2026 season has become the face of a rejuvenated Earthquakes side that has taken MLS by surprise.
The connection between Judd and Arena goes back further than most realize. When Judd was nine or ten years old, Arena held a coaching clinic at a hotel in Las Vegas during his early days in charge of the LA Galaxy. Judd youth team was recruited as the demo group.
So he coached me then, and I reminded him about it, Judd recalled with a grin. And he said, Well, were you as big a pain in the ass then as you are now? I was like, yeah, probably.
The Birth of Grit FC
Judd has coined a phrase that captures the spirit of this San Jose team: Grit FC. It has become a social media tagline, printed on t-shirts, and a badge of honor for a squad that most pundits dismissed before the season began. While the Quakes slipped to third in the Supporters Shield race after a winless May, their 9-3-2 record represents a remarkable turnaround for a club that missed the playoffs last year and has been among the league biggest strugglers over the past decade.
This team is different than any team I have ever played with, Judd said. It is unexpected. Maybe we did not have the roster on paper everybody thought you needed to compete in this league. But within the locker room itself, it is like coming into training with all your best friends.
A Striker with Attitude
What makes Judd effective is not just his goal-scoring record but his relentless physical presence. He describes his own style with characteristic bluntness: No matter what, even if I am not producing goals, I am going to bring that mother-effer attitude to the field.
Growing up, Judd idolized Wayne Rooney and was compared to Eric Cantona for his fiery temperament. I was a handful, saw red a lot, he admitted. People would compare me to Eric Cantona when I was growing up with just how fiery I was. I think I have maybe simmered down since then, which is kind of crazy to say.
Arena Magic at Work
Bruce Arena, the winningest coach in MLS history, has worked his magic in San Jose with a roster that ranks in the bottom third of league salary expenditure. The Quakes rely on overlooked SuperDraft picks and unheralded journeymen who play with a chip on their shoulder. Judd, leading the line with nine goals, epitomizes that underdog mentality.
As San Jose heads into the World Cup break, they sit third in the Supporters Shield race, firmly in playoff contention. And their Grit Reaper has no plans to slow down.
