Adri Mehmeti: The 17-Year-Old USMNT Prospect Taking MLS by Storm

A Star is Born in New Jersey

At just 17 years old, Adri Mehmeti has established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in Major League Soccer. The Red Bull New York homegrown midfielder is drawing comparisons to the best in the business, with European giants such as Arsenal, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich reportedly monitoring his rapid development.

The Staten Island native, who joined the Red Bulls academy at age 11, has become a central figure in the first team during the 2026 season. His composure on the ball belies his youth, drawing praise from teammates, analysts, and opponents alike.

A Composure Beyond His Years

When I was young, my first thought whenever I subbed into a game or started a game was that I had to be running a million miles an hour all the time, said former Red Bulls great and MLS analyst Dax McCarty, who won two Supporters Shields with the club. With Mehmeti, it is actually the total opposite. He almost plays the game in a slow way, but his brain plays it in the fastest way possible.

That rare combination of physical calm and mental sharpness is what sets Mehmeti apart. FotMob data places him in the 89th percentile for defensive contributions among MLS midfielders, ranking highly in tackles, interceptions, and recoveries. But what truly distinguishes him is his passing range. No player in MLS has completed more line-breaking passes this season, with a rate that would rank second in Europe top five leagues behind only Adam Wharton.

A Soccer Household

Mehmeti footballing education began at home. His father, Vani, a semiprofessional player in his younger days, immersed his son in a ball-is-life environment from toddlerhood. From coaching his early youth teams to setting up drills in the backyard, every moment was an opportunity to develop.

For me, it was always the extra hours that I put in, with my dad or by myself, Mehmeti told MLSsoccer.com. It helped a lot. So when I could come back into training the next day, I could always be one or two steps ahead.

The family goes so far as to analyze footage from their home security cameras to review the one-on-one sessions in the backyard, a level of dedication uncommon even among professional athletes.

Derby Day Intensity

As a product of the New York football system, Mehmeti understands the intensity of the Hudson River Derby against New York City FC better than most. Having come through the ranks from the academy, he knows the fixture carries extra significance at every level of the club.

Throughout the whole academy, throughout all the ranks, second team, first team, they are just bragging rights in a derby like that, Mehmeti said. Every time I step into one of those games, I want to give my all and give everything I have, leave the field with no regrets.

USMNT Future

As the son of Albanian immigrants, Mehmeti qualifies for both the United States and Albania internationally. With performances that have reportedly drawn interest from across the Atlantic, the question of his international future is becoming increasingly pertinent. For USMNT fans, Mehmeti represents the next generation of American midfield talent, a player who dictates tempo, breaks lines, and does the dirty work in equal measure.
