Derby Drama Moves to Social Media
The Madrid derby has taken an unexpected turn — this time unfolding not on the pitch but across social media. Real Madrid’s public admission that they had made a €150 million offer for Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez was met with a blistering response from their local rivals, who accused Los Blancos of lacking class and respect.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez confirmed that the bid had been lodged for Alvarez, the World Cup-winning Argentine forward who has become a cornerstone of Diego Simeone’s project at the Metropolitano. But when Real’s statement referenced “good relations between the two clubs,” Atletico’s response was swift and sarcastic.
‘You Made Us Laugh More Than Barcelona’
Atletico’s official social media accounts reacted with laughing emojis to Real Madrid’s statement, before releasing a detailed rebuttal that painted a very different picture of the negotiations. The Rojiblancos claimed that far from maintaining good relations, Real Madrid’s approach had been met with a firm rejection — and that they found the whole episode amusing.
“Official statement with our clarifications regarding the official statement from our neighbours, Real Madrid,” Atletico’s post began, dripping with irony. The club went on to suggest that Real’s behaviour had made them laugh even more than Barcelona’s recent attempts to sign the same player days earlier, before adding a pointed plea: “Please don’t steal children from the neighbourhood.”
The reference was widely interpreted as a dig at Real Madrid’s historical approach to signing players from rival clubs, including their pursuit of Atletico’s own academy products over the years.
Alvarez at the Centre of a Transfer Storm
Julian Alvarez has established himself as one of the most sought-after forwards in world football since his move to Atletico. His work rate, tactical intelligence, and clinical finishing have made him indispensable to Simeone’s system, and Atletico have consistently maintained that he is not for sale at any price.
Real Madrid’s €150 million bid was an attempt to test that resolve, but Atletico’s response suggests their position has not wavered. The public nature of the exchange, however, has added a new layer of tension to what is already one of football’s most intense rivalries.
For Alvarez, the situation is a testament to his rapid rise. From winning the World Cup with Argentina in 2022 to becoming the target of a nine-figure bid, the 26-year-old’s stock has never been higher. Whether he remains at Atletico beyond the summer or eventually makes a move, one thing is clear — the battle for Julian Alvarez is far from over.
