Real Madrid Make Historic Bid for Atletico Star
Real Madrid have officially confirmed they submitted a €150 million offer for Atlético Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, in what would have been one of the most expensive transfers in football history. The announcement came via an official club communiqué on Tuesday, just two days after Florentino Pérez was re-elected as club president.
The bid, widely reported as “the biggest offer in Real Madrid’s history,” was immediately rejected by their cross-city rivals, who pointed to Alvarez’s €500 million release clause as the only route to securing his services.
The Galáctico Campaign Promise
Pérez had campaigned for re-election on a platform that included signing a marquee “galáctico” this summer, and the offer for Alvarez — the Argentine World Cup winner — represents a direct fulfilment of that pledge. Speculation had initially linked Real Madrid with Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, Vitinha, and João Neves, but it is now clear that the 26-year-old Alvarez was the primary target all along.
Alvarez’s Outstanding Season
The Argentine international, nicknamed “La Araña” (The Spider), has enjoyed a stellar 2025-26 campaign under Diego Simeone at the Wanda Metropolitano. In 49 appearances across all competitions, Alvarez scored 20 goals and provided 9 assists, cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s most complete forwards.
Since joining Atlético from Manchester City for €75 million in 2024, his market value has risen to €100 million (per Transfermarkt), and his current contract runs until 2030.
Why the Offer Was Always Unlikely to Succeed
Despite the eye-watering sum, several factors made the bid a long shot from the start. Alvarez operates primarily through the centre, the same position occupied by Kylian Mbappé at the Bernabéu. Furthermore, selling their star Argentine striker to their fiercest rivals would have been politically untenable for Atlético president Enrique Cerezo.
What Comes Next
The rejection leaves Real Madrid in an awkward position. Having publicly declared their ambition and named their target, they must now either return with an offer approaching the €500 million release clause or pivot to alternative targets. Barcelona have also been linked with Alvarez, adding another layer of intrigue to a saga that promises to dominate the summer transfer window.
