A Blueprint for Recovery
Juventus must sign four high-quality players this summer if they are to bridge the gap to Italy’s elite, according to former Bianconero Massimo Mauro. The ex-midfielder, who won the Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup during his time in Turin, believes the club has fallen behind its rivals and requires a clear-headed recruitment strategy rather than panic buying.
Speaking about the current state of the squad, Mauro argued that the issue is not simply about spending money but about identifying the right profiles: players who have won trophies, who understand the pressure of competing at the highest level, and who can immediately raise the quality of the starting XI. He pointed out that the current Juventus squad lacks winners — experienced campaigners who know how to close out tight matches and demand standards from those around them.
What Juventus Are Missing
The Bianconeri finished well adrift of Inter and Napoli in the 2025-26 Serie A season, exposing significant gaps in both depth and quality. While the club has invested in young prospects in recent windows, Mauro stressed that raw potential alone will not deliver the Scudetto. A mix of established stars and hungry talent is required.
He identified four specific positions that need upgrading: a central defender with leadership qualities, a dynamic midfielder capable of progressing the ball, a creative wide player, and a reliable goal-scorer. Without these additions, Mauro warned, Juventus risk falling further behind as their domestic rivals continue to strengthen.
The Experience Factor
The theme of experience runs throughout Mauro’s analysis. He noted that the most successful Juventus sides of the past — those built by Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri in their first spells — had a core of players who had been there and done it at the highest level. From Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Pirlo to Giorgio Chiellini and Carlos Tevez, those teams were defined by characters who understood what it took to win.
Today’s squad lacks that backbone. While players like Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic are talented, they need support from battle-hardened teammates to thrive consistently. Mauro said the club’s directors must resist the temptation to sign inexperienced or unproven talents and instead prioritise footballers who can contribute immediately.
Market Realities
The summer transfer window presents both opportunities and challenges for Juventus. With several top players across Europe potentially available and the Saudi Pro League continuing to reshape the market, the Bianconeri must act decisively. However, Mauro cautioned that inflated prices and fierce competition from Premier League clubs mean Juventus cannot afford to waste time on secondary targets.
He urged the hierarchy to move quickly for their primary targets rather than settling for cheaper alternatives later in the window. A focused, efficient approach — identifying four targets early and getting deals done before pre-season — would give the new coach the best possible platform to rebuild.
For Juventus, the message from Mauro is clear: ambition must be matched by action. Four signings of genuine quality could transform a stagnant squad into a contender.
