Organised Crime Connections Exposed
An extensive investigation by Fotbollskanalen has uncovered direct links between organised criminal gangs and the network of individuals at the centre of Swedens match-fixing scandal. The investigation, drawing on a massive economic crime case file, reveals that money has flowed from criminal networks to individuals identified as central figures in the match-fixing operation.
Fotbollskanalen has examined the environment surrounding the suspected match-fixers and their associates, using the vast economic crime investigation material that includes more than 80 individuals linked to organised crime who have been suspected of laundering criminal proceeds, according to the Swedish Economic Crime Authority.
Payments to Known Criminals
The material reveals that payments were sent to individuals with established criminal connections, including one recipient identified by the alias Jordgubben (The Strawberry). The transactions form part of a web of financial flows that connect the match-fixing network to known criminal figures operating in Sweden and internationally.
Fredrik Gardare, a former police officer who led the now-disbanded unit specialising in sports-related crime, told Fotbollskanalen that both Swedish domestic criminal networks and international organisations are involved. It is both our own criminal networks in the country and also international networks doing this, Gardare said.
A Long-Standing Warning
Gardare had for years warned that organised crime was infiltrating Swedish football, particularly in connection with match-fixing. His unit was eventually disbanded despite the growing threat, raising questions about whether Swedish authorities have allocated sufficient resources to combat the problem. The revelations from the chat scandal appear to vindicate his warnings.
The chat conversations, which Fotbollskanalen exposed earlier this year, contain detailed evidence of widespread match manipulation affecting both Swedish and international competitions. The newly revealed criminal gang connections add a deeply concerning dimension to an already disturbing picture.
Impact on Swedish Football
The revelations have sent shockwaves through Swedish football. Clubs, players, and officials are now grappling with the realisation that the integrity of matches may have been compromised by individuals with direct ties to organised crime. The Swedish Football Association has faced mounting pressure to explain what it knew and when.
The case file, described as massive by investigators, suggests the scale of the problem is far larger than any single club or league. With connections spanning multiple countries and involving dozens of individuals, the match-fixing scandal represents one of the most significant integrity crises in Swedish sports history.
