A Promising Venture That Fell Apart
Three years after H&M chairman and billionaire Karl-Johan Persson acquired the Swedish football agency Foot Nation for approximately 20 million kronor, Fotbollskanalen can reveal that the partnership has collapsed amid a bitter internal dispute. The agency, which was placed within Perssons sports investment vehicle Wesport, has now parted ways with its founder Miro Jaganjac.
The acquisition, completed in December 2022, was seen as a major statement of intent in Scandinavian football. Foot Nation represented a portfolio of players including Isaac Kiese Thelin, Darijan Bojanic, and Edvin Kurtulus, all of whom moved into the Wesport stable following the deal. The merger was supposed to create a powerhouse in Nordic football representation.
The Breakdown
Fotbollskanalen has learned that a fracture emerged between Jaganjac and Wesport CEO Nina Wennerstrom approximately two years after the buyout. The relationship deteriorated to the point where the two parties virtually stopped communicating. The investment did not produce the results we had hoped for, Wennerstrom confirmed to Fotbollskanalen.
We were in agreement on how the collaboration ended and there are no uncertainties about that, she added. The statement suggests a clean break, though sources indicate the split was preceded by months of tension.
A Cross-Sport Ambition
Wesport is a significant player in athlete representation across multiple sports, including tennis and ice hockey. The company launched its dedicated football division in 2020, aiming to build a formidable roster of Scandinavian talent. The acquisition of Foot Nation was the centerpiece of that strategy, bringing in an established agency with a ready-made client list and deep connections in Swedish football.
The dissolution of the partnership represents a setback for those ambitions. While Wesport retains its football division, losing Jaganjac and potentially some of the player relationships he cultivated weakens the agencys position in the competitive Nordic market.
What Happens Next
For the players involved, the split raises questions about representation stability. Player agents play a crucial role in contract negotiations, transfer decisions, and career planning. A fracturing of the agency relationship can create uncertainty during critical moments in a players career, particularly during transfer windows.
The football agency business in Scandinavia remains highly competitive, with several well-established firms vying for top talent. Whether Wesport rebuilds its football division or shifts focus to its other sports remains to be seen, but the Foot Nation chapter has clearly come to a definitive close.
